In 2014, the Italian artist and designer, Francesco Zavattari, began an intensive research on color with the support of Studio Matitanera, whose activities span from industrial graphics to marketing, including publishing and design.
The basis of Invelight is to reduce the gap in terms of yield between the two color models RGB and CMYK. A palette of colors, characterized by a manual - optical procedure and not an automatic - parametric procedure, between the two methods is synthesized: each color is worked ‘visually’ in order that it be as similar as possible to its equivalent on the other model.
In the spring of 2014, Zavattari chose Madrid for the official launch of his project. The three main civic museums, Prado, Thyssen Bornemisza and Reina Sofia (where the project is officially accredited) were the perfect study choice for the research he intended to develop: an exhaustive study of the use of color throughout the ages. His primary work was concentrated on ‘repetitive chromatic patterns’ found in great historic works of art. The hundreds of notes taken were the basis for the development of the first series ‘Invelight Masterpieces’.
Immediately following, thanks to the help of trainees from various private and public art schools, the second palette, ‘Invelight Lifelike’, was developed, with colors found in everyday life: creamy chickpea soup or a tropical fish were the starting point for the synthesis of new colors.
In 2015, some important companies showed their trust in Invelight, and began to use its colors and consultation services for their products, in particular, in regard to product packaging. The result was immediately evident: the colors of Invelight were consistently similar from sketch to video to the final phase of four-color process printing. Not only: some of the products introduced into large-scale retailing markets became out-and-out commercial successes.
Research of Invelight continues to advance thanks to the support of new professionals involved in the project and the acquisition of new methodologies.
At the beginning of 2017, an important objective of the mission statement of Invelight regarding commitment to the education sector began to come together.
After various meetings held in schools of different types and levels, the format ‘Color State of Mind’ was officially introduced by holding a theoretical masterclass and a practical workshop.
The masterclass, personally held by Francesco, was an opportunity to relate the entire experience of Invelight to date, and show students various examples of the usage of color in the fields of industrial design, fashion, architecture, and the history of art in general with particular reference to a parallel with modern communication.
The workshop was, instead, a platform for an important collaboration officially set in motion at the beginning of the year between the artist and Cromology Italia, sector leading company in the production and sales of paints.
‘Color State of Mind’ was enhanced by technical support that supplied numerous free samples of paint to the students involved so they could rework them and develop new Invelight colors.
The project was presented 24 and 25 January 2017 at the prestigious Accademia di Belle Arti of Lecce, where after a successful two days, a new palette, ‘Invelight EDU – Accademia Lecce’, was created with over 350 new colors.
After that first important step, Color State of Mind was replicated several times in Italy, Portugal and Holland.
